Endless Bliss | Happy Lifestyle Blog: The Effects of Netflix on My Personal Life.

The Effects of Netflix on My Personal Life.

Seriously, what did I do before Netflix? Probably had an actual life. Maybe I took walks outside or cooked more or actually went to bed at a decent hour. Those days are behind me though. Nowadays, it's all about Netflix. It's a surprise that I even have time to blog anymore.

It all started when my co-workers got me an Apple TV for my birthday. I no longer had to sit uncomfortably to watch Netflix on my computer; I could lay in my bed and watch it on my TV. Then Jon told me that I could use his account, and he made me my own little sub-account on his account, meaning I could rate movies so Netflix could give me better recommendations, and more importantly, I could create "My List" of movies and TV shows that I wanted to watch. It's become an addicting habit. Not one that I'm proud of, but also not one that I'm willing to give up.

The Negative(ish) Effects of Netflix
I mean, can Netflix ever reallllly be a bad thing?

Casual pic of me dressed as a Ravenclaw.
Sleep? Not tonight.  It's gotten to the point where I'd rather watch "just one more episode" of a show rather than get a full eight hours of sleep at night. I'm lucky if I make it to bed by midnight. Netflix has become a part of my night routine.

What social life? Oh, you want to go out and have drinks? Sorry, I'd rather lie in bed with Netflix and sip on some wine by myself.

Just stressed. If I'm watching a really stressful show like Scandal or The Secret Circle, I get stressed out at work thinking about what's going to happen next. The stress is elevated when no one I know watches the show (or has even heard of it), so I can't talk to anyone about why I'm stressed out. It's a problem.

Anger. When I'm through watching a Netflix show, I usually get a little upset. Why? 1) Either the show is still airing new episodes, meaning that I either have to wait for the current season to be on Netflix or I have to catch up on the current season and then wait a week (or more) between each episode. Or 2) the show got canceled meaning there is no real ending to the TV show. Truly tragic.

Overall laziness. All I do is lie in bed and watch Netflix. Oh, and sometimes I blog.

The Positive Effects of Netflix
Just to give you a visual of what I usually look like while watching Netflix. Oh and there's my roommate's dog.
More puppy cuddling. Molly loves to cuddle. She doesn't like to play with toys or anything like that. Netflix is the perfect activity for both of us to enjoy together. I get to watch a ton of TV, and she gets to cuddle with me. Win-win.

Always comfy. Since I'm always in bed watching Netflix, that means that I'm always comfortable and warm under my blankets. The only bad thing is having to get up to do inconvenient things such as figuring out what to eat for dinner and using the potty.

Discovery. There are so many shows and movies on Netflix that I never would have heard of, let alone watched, if it wasn't for Netflix. I usually don't go out seeking things to watch, and now that I have Netflix at my fingertips, all of the things that I could potentially be interested in watching come straight to me.

This post may seem like the bad outweighs the good, but in all actuality, that's so not true. I think all of the positive effects should count as two. Actually puppy cuddling should count as three, because, I mean, look at this face:
I would have come up with more things for the positive effects, but I think I'm going to go watch Netflix instead.

  2. I'm right there with you! I choose to stay in with Netflix probably 90% of the time, though it doesn't help that it's also cold outside so I'd rather be warm anyway. Try using lots of different toys with Molly. It took a couple weeks with Jessie, but now she loves to play, and it's so fun to watch her!

  4. Yes. All of these. Sometimes people want to hang out and sometimes I'm like but . . . netflix. When they are willing to hang out and watch Netflix? Perfection

  5. I agree with all of this, during the week I almost never do anything after work except go straight to watching Netflix. It's so tempting to stay in all weekend just to watch Netflix too! We will have to swap some of our Netflix favorites! I loved Secret Circle!

  6. Haha I don't even remember what life was like before Netflix. I just started watching Hart of Dixie today, and I'm like, okay bye social life.

  7. Thank you! I love Netflix too. I think after a vacation is the best time to watch Netflix!

  8. Thanks for the advice with Molly! I just get discouraged so easily because I bought her a bunch of toys, but she just sniffs them and looks away. I haven't tried it that much though. I'll have to keep trying.

  9. Me too! I watch all of the shows that no one else has heard of. It's a sad life. But happy at the same time.

  11. Yes! I wish my friends would just come over and watch Netflix with me. Maybe I'll throw a Netflix party or something and just force them to watch with me.

  12. Yes! My weekends are FULL of Netflix. After I finish a show, I try to wait at least a couple days before I start a new one so I can act like I have a social life. I DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN SECRET CIRCLE! That just made me so happy. I can't believe it just ended like that. It was the perfect segway into a new season.

  14. I had an on-and-off relationship with Netflix because the Canadian version had such shitty content and it was just uncomfortable to sit at my computer for hours. Black Friday 2013, I ended up buying a media box streamer which supported Netflix and reactivated my account ^__^ soooo happy. The only downside is that if I want to switch to American Netflix, I need to watch at the computer... or plug in HDMI (remember, I'm lazy :P) but thank god for Netflix's automatically playing the next episode :P

  17. I've watched so many random shows on Netflix and I was so glad I decided to watch it! They always cancel the best shows!

  18. That's a good thing! It's such a time waster. All I do is watch TV! I followed you on GFC! Thanks so much for checking out my blog!

  19. I didn't realize that the Canadian version would be so different, but that makes sense. I didn't even know that there was such a thing as Amazon Netflix!

  20. It really is! I can watch Netflix for hours and not even realize it. Puppy cuddling is the best!

  21. Haha that's so funny that you're a computer teacher and don't know how. I'm so bad with technology too. It's sad because we're supposed to be the technology generation.

  22. On my Apple TV, I have the option of watching Hulu, but I don't subscribe. I only use Netflix because Jon lets me use his login so I don't have to pay. I would love Hulu Plus though! Everything is so current!

  23. They really do! It's such a shame.

  24. Exactly! I love just lying in bed watching Netflix. Perfect way to spend my nights and weekends!

  25. Haha! I've been sucked into the Netflix vortex more times than I'd like to admit myself. Here's a little gem: If you haven't already watched the whole of Gossip Girl, all the seasons are available on Netflix now, you can power through them at warp speed (they are so, so addicting) AND it wraps up nicely at the end- so no left wondering what happened or waiting for a new season to finish. :)

  26. I have the first five seasons of Gossip Girl, but not the sixth season! I need to watch it! I love that show. The beginning seasons are better than the later ones though.

  27. I definitely agree! I love sitting at home and watching Netflix, but although it forces me not to have a social life- snuggling with my pillow while watching my favorite show makes up for it!

  28. I'm honestly at the point where I wish I hadn't started Netflix- I used to be the only one in my family who didn't use our account, but now I binge watch wayyy too often! I'm actually glad I don't have a puppy to cuddle with because then I KNOW I'd never be productive :)

  29. Oh man netflix gives me a hangover...i will get so hooked on a show!!!

  30. hahaha I love this! It's all so true! I'm not completely addicted to Netflix, but that's mostly because I don't really know how to work our PS3...or the wii. shh, don't tell anyone I'm a computer teacher

  31. I love Netflix, but I think I prefer Hulu! When shows like Glee and Once Upon a Time are airing, I can watch every week and keep up with it even without cable!
