Endless Bliss | Happy Lifestyle Blog: TV Shows That Ended Too Soon.

TV Shows That Ended Too Soon.

My last two blogs posts mentioned watching TV, so why not make it third? Really, I think that this is a sign that my television watching is getting out of hand. I need to read more. I've only read three books so far this year. That's sad.

Anyway, I don't know how the TV show making world works, but I do know that some of my most beloved shows don't get a real chance. We have dumb shows like Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Secret Life of the American Teenager and Teen Mom that last for several awful seasons. Meanwhile, all of the shows that are actually awesome are just shoved under the rug. It makes me angry, because some of these shows are left with no ending. Everyone is just left wondering where the crap was this show going, unless the show ends up being based on a book or something. Even then, the show and book end up being vastly different.

Dollhouse
I can't believe this show only got two seasons. My theory is that it was aired on Fridays, and people usually go out on Fridays, so no one cared to watch it. This show was created by the same person who made Buffy the Vampire SlayerAngel and Marvel's The Avengers, so you know the elements of the show were creative and made you think. Dollhouse was about underground establishments populated with dolls, which were people that chose to give up a year of their life, usually due to a tragedy they weren't ready to face. During this year, they live in the dollhouse and are imprinted with different personalities for clients who pay large sums of money. The dolls are used for whatever the client needs, such as being imprinted with the personality of a loved one who has passed away, being used as a spy or as a temporary mother. It was just such a fascinating concept to me. The show did have an ending of sorts, but you can tell that the last few episodes were rushed because they had to think of a way to end it.

Lie to Me
Jon and I watched this show together on Netflix on a whim. We both ended up really liking the concept of the show. It's about a man who is essentially a human lie detector. He is hired by many people to read faces and body language to figure out if people are lying. It was a crime series that made me wish that I could read faces. The last episode leaves you hanging with some romantic episodes, and it would have been the perfect segway into another season.

Life Unexpected
This series isn't as intense as the two aforementioned series. It's about a girl who has grown up in many foster homes. She wants to file for emancipation, but she needs her parents to sign these papers. She ends up living with her biological mom, and a lot of drama ensues. I wanted to watch this show because Roswell was one of my favorite shows when I was younger, and Shiri Appleby from that show is also in Life Unexpected, and I just love her. This show was canceled after two seasons, and it does have an ending; however, the last five minutes just transport you two years forward. Even though everything I wanted to happen happened, it would have been nice to see how it all folded out. You can tell that they just kind of threw together this ending because they had to, and a couple of elements in the last scene just didn't make sense. I was disappointed.

Firefly
Another series created by Joss Whedon. It was set in 2517 and followed a group of people aboard a ship called Serenity. This show literally just ended. There was so much they could have done with it. Even though it was eventually made into a movie, Serenity, a movie that I love, I really would have liked to see the more important elements play out slowly on TV. I don't think the show got a fair shot.

Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23
Okay, I know this show was just a silly little sitcom, but I think it's much better than a few of the sitcoms they have on TV now, like Two Broke Girls. I can't even sit through an episode of that show. This show followed a girl from a small town who moved to New York City and became roommates with a party girl. This show was laugh out loud funny, and the perfect show to watch over dinner after a long day at work or while brushing Molly.

The Secret Circle
This show only lasted for one season, and it was based on a book, so maybe I will end up reading it. It's about a girl who moves to Washington after her mother dies, and she finds out that she's a witch. She and five others create a secret circle, and after doing so, they're faced with lots of supernatural challenges that they have no idea how to face. I recently watched this show on Netflix because it recommended it to me. I thought it was excellent. The season finale made it look like the next season, if they would have made one, was going to be amazing. I'm sad that I'll never get to know what happens.

It saddens me that there are so many shows out there that don't get a real chance. It could be because of marketing or because they play while other popular shows are on TV, so they don't get as much exposure as the creators would have hoped. What are some cancelled TV shows that you wish were given another chance?

Jennifer Lawrence, she just seems super awesome and if she's still filming the next Hunger Games movie I'd get to kiss Josh Hutcherson.

What song are you currently obsessed with?
The Fire by Kina Grannis, I heard it on youtube and bought the song on iTunes before it was over!

  3. I really didn't think I would like Secret Circle that much. It was definitely a guilty pleasure of mine too. I wanted to watch The Ringer. I love SMG!

  4. I thought the B---- in Apartment 23 was so funny! I'd always see ads for it when I was watching new girl, so I ended up watching it- I miss it!

  6. I've never heard of these shows! Although a few of them on this list sounds very interesting.....only they really don't have endings and if I get sucked in, that would drive me mad! Lol

  7. I've heard of a few of these shows but never watched any of them! I'm not a huge TV person but sometimes I wonder how some shows get so many seasons-- like who is still watching this stuff?! haha One show I loved that one lasted one season was Mercy on nbc! It was so good, I thought! Even though I was apparently the only one :)

  9. Lie to Me was epic... I didn't think anyone else remembered (or even know) about that show. I miss it so muuuuch, I loved learning little bits of how to catch a liar, haha. The Secret Circle was pretty cool too. Hated The Secret Life of an American Teenager - such crappy acting.

  10. I've never watched any of these shows! A lot of people suggest Firefly to me though. The concept of Dollhouse sounds crazy! I will also admit, that The Secret Life was a guilty pleasure of mine. My sister got me into it when it first came out, and after that I was just never satisfied not knowing the ending (it was crap). haha Many hours of my life wasted.

  12. I agree! I hate when 'dumb' shows stay on for multiple seasons and great underrated shows get cancelled!

  13. I have definitely seen some of my fav shows end way too soon, like Alphas that was on SyFy! Never watched any of those mentioned, but my parents liked Firefly and I know some friends that liked Lie to Me. I have never even heard of Doll House, but it sounds intriguing!

  14. I've never heard of Mercy! Haha. I know what you mean about shows getting so many seasons though. I know I'm probably the only girl that doesn't watch The Bachelor. And there are shows like Real World and a ton of soap operas that just make me wonder how they're still making new episodes.

  15. Jon and I watch so much TV together. I love it though. Just cuddling and watching TV and movies. Dollhouse was such a great show. I think if more people knew about it, it would've done well. I just finished watching The Secret Circle a few weeks ago, and I thought it was so good. Such a shame that it wasn't renewed for a second season.

  16. I loved Lie to Me. I don't know anyone else that watched it, so I'm glad you understand why I was sad that it just ended. I tried watching Secret Life of the American Teenager, and I just could not. It's so horrible. The acting was bad and so was the storyline.

  17. Dollhouse is a really awesome show. It's one of those shows that make you think. Firefly is awesome too! I watched Secret Life of the American Teenager for awhile actually. I watched the whole first season and part of the second, but I just couldn't keep with it. The acting was just so bad, and I'm like, where is this show going? And it went nowhere apparently haha.

  18. It was so hilarious! I don't think it was given a proper chance. I think if more people knew about it, they would have watched it, because it was just so dang funny.

  19. I know! All of the people watch the dumb shows and make fun of them, and they don't take the time to watch the shows with actual content that make them think.

  20. Dollhouse was an awesome show, and I think it would have done really well if people knew about it. I know a lot of people that watched it after it got cancelled and wish they would've kept going with it.

  21. I haven't watched most of those (I wasn't into TV until Iman and I got together) but I was so sad about Don't Trust the B!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Me too! I watched it on Netflix and just thought it was a hoot. I'm surprised it didn't last longer.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Maybe people thought it was too raunchy?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Quite possibly. A lot of TV shows are getting a little more risque nowadays.

  25. Friday night is where tv goes to die, I've read countless books noting this. Also, FOX loves canceling good shows (Family Guy, Arrested Development, Firefly, etc). Unfortunately ratings are the biggest factor outside of potential storylines. Cost of production kills a lot of scifi shows too :( If you liked Firefly/Serenity, they continued the story via graphic novels. I haven't gotten to reading them but I hear good things. Though you wrote about shows ending too soon, I have noticed a trend towards shows going on too long. HIMYM, Grey's Anatomy....those have been kicking a dead horse for a long time.

  26. PUSHING DAISIES AND GCB. You should check them out bc they are SO worth watching. Pushing Daisies is my FAVORITE TV show.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The only show that I know has survived on Friday nights is Grimm. I love that show, and it's currently on it's 3rd season. They changed it to a different day of the week for a little while, but then they ended up changing it back to Friday. I know a few of the shows I named ended because of the cost. And I agree, there are some crappy shows that go on for way too long. I've never watched Grey's Anatomy, but I love HIMYM!

  28. I watched Secret Circle because she was in Life Unexpected too! Secret Circle was a nice surprise. I really didn't think I was going to like that show as much as I did. Joss Whedon is so brilliant! I love almost everything I've watched by him.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've never watched any of those shows! I've never heard of Pushing Daisies, but I did want to watch GCB. The only reason I didn't was because it was on at the same time as another show that I watched and then I completely forgot about it. I'll definitely have to look into Pushing Daisies!

  30. Oh man I LOVED Lie to Me and Life Unexpected! I'm so sad they ended those.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Haha exactly! Don't watch them. Except Life Unexpected has an ending. It's just disappointing how they kind of skip to it. And Firefly has a movie called Serenity that gives it an ending. Otherwise, don't get sucked in! Except they're awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I loved Life Unexpected too, it ended way too soon! I think I started watching Secret Circle because she was in Life Unexpected! I've watched almost every Joss Whedon show, except Dollhouse it's been on my list for a while now!
