Songs to Listen to When You're Sad.

sad songs

I think an interesting thing about being a blogger and reading blogs is that about 95% of the blogs you read and write are about happy stuff. It's rare that bloggers write about the bad things that happen to them. Usually, it's about vacations they want to take, advice they want to give, outfits they wore, etc.

When I sat down to write this post, I wasn't in a good place. I just had a breakdown at work because I'm going through yet another quarter-life crisis. I always feel like I'm stuck, but my brain is going in a million different directions. I wasn't in a good place, and I felt like there was nothing that could pull me out of it. I'm so lucky to have Jon who just sat there with me and let me cry on his chest and my puppies who showered me with kisses.

I've never been the kind of person who can be instantly pulled out of a bad or sad mood. It's usually a combination of things, and yesterday, what I needed was a good cry with my boyfriend, love from my dogs, laughs while watching Friends, a lot of good food, clips from Lip Sync Battle, and a lot of sad music.

Ironically, sad music makes me feel better sometimes because I feel like the songs are speaking to me. It's like someone out there gets it, and they're singing it to me. These are a few songs that helped pull me out of my sad mood yesterday.

PERFECT - HEDLEY
// I'm not perfect, but I keep trying cause that's what I said I would do from the start.

BOSTON - AUGUSTANA
// You don't know me, you don't even care...I think I'll start a new life, I think I'll start it over, where no one knows my name.

HIDE - A FRIEND IN LONDON
// I'm so tired now. Gonna go lay down, gonna hide in my bed until everything safe and, I might never wake up. I blew it all, I'll never wake up. Gonna hide in my bed until everything is safe and the sun comes up again.

WHEN IT RAINS - PARAMORE
// And when it rains, on this side of town it touches, everything.

RIVERS AND ROADS - THE HEAD AND THE HEART
// If you don't know what to make of this, then we will not relate.

COUGH SYRUP - YOUNG THE GIANT
// If I could find a way to see this straight, I'd run away to some fortune that I, I should have found by now

BAD DAY - DANIEL POWTER
(It wouldn't be a sad song playlist without this one.)
// You're faking a smile with the coffee you go. You tell me your life's been way off line. You're falling to pieces every time.

I have a whole playlist of songs that I like to listen to when I'm having a bad day. The songs cover a number of bases - feeling lost, feeling lonely, feeling worthless, relationships, etc. It's called "Let It Rain," and you can listen to it here

What songs do you listen to when you're feeling down?

  3. I'm sorry you had such an awful day yesterday (I hope today is feeling better). I try to balance blogging about happy and sad. I don't want to paint my life as always happy because it isn't and I don't think it is healthy to give off that illusion but I also try hard not to be a super pessimistic downer either. I think listening to music I match your mood can definitely be therapeutic.

  4. Solid playlist! I'm sorry you had a bad day, those are the worst especially when they're at work and/or work related. The quarter life crisis bad days are really bad... So extra hugs from me, because I keep circling my quarter life crises like it's my actual job.

  5. I'm sorry about your bad day! I love that you wrote about something less happy and sunshiney. Because you are write most bloggers don't talk about the bad stuff. I can't wait to listen to some of these songs! My favorite songs to cry to are Black Beauty by Lana Del Ray and Feel on Bad Days by Rubyhorse. Soo good! Go listen to them!

  9. YES. This speaks to me. First off, message me anytime. I've been told I have therapist traits, so I gotchu. (; Second, YES to the songs. My acapella group did Cough Syrup my freshmen year! And Bad Day is just the quintessential jam for...bad days! Hoping your day turned around bigtime. (:

  14. Noooo don't feel bad :( You are beautiful and doing amazing things with your life! Plus you have adorable dogs and a boyfriend who loves you. But. . . you already knew all that. Sometimes you just have to wait your bad day out. Cough Syrup is TOTALLY my bad day/sad song. And then I even have a whole cd of sad country songs that I'll listen to if I really need a good cry. Oh, also The Script's For the First Time makes me bawl like a baby - even when I'm in a good mood.

  17. Oh no! I'm so sorry that you had a bad day. Even though they're a part of life, I really hate seeing anyone have one. :( When I'm having a bad day, I force myself to listen to happy songs... or just nap it off! Hope that this week is AMAZING for you AND quarter life crisis free :)

  18. I am very sorry that you are dealing with that! I hope things start to look up for you! You are so sweet! I really love this playlist, some of these songs would definitely be on mine too. I listen to a mix of happy and sad songs to get me out of my funk. But for me a good cry and a nap is the best way to get it out.

  31. I definitely will! I feel like you'd be the best virtual therapist. So when you get a random rant message from me, don't be alarmed. I love that you're in an acapella group. That's so neat. I wish my school had one.

  32. I love "Boston" so much. I can definitely see why you view "Bad Day" that way. I remember jamming to it.

  33. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a sad playlist! I've never listened to Greg Laswell, but I love Sara Barelles! Thanks for the suggestions!

  34. Thanks, Lisa. I almost just let it slide, but my stubborn self wanted to keep to my semi-schedule. Writing actually did help me get some of my stress out. I ended up writing in my journal, which I haven't done for a couple months, and I felt so much better afterward. I'm glad you like "Rivers and Roads" too! It's such an amazing song.

  35. You're so sweet, Marie! Thank you so much. Lana Del Ray has such a haunting and beautiful voice. I love it. Thank you for the suggestions!
