Ingrid Nilsen is Gay & I Love Her

Ingrid Nilsen came out in a video on her YouTube channel yesterday, and in spite of the video being nearly 20 minutes long, I watched it several times because I was so moved by her bravery and just the rawness of it all. [Scroll down to the bottom of this post to watch!] When I saw the thumbnail for the video, I honestly thought "What?" because I had no idea, and I think that goes to show that even when you make your life public on the internet, so much of yourself is still hidden.

I've been a viewer of Ingrid's before I even created my own YouTube channel. I love her adorable and bubbly personality and her goofy sayings. She's such an inspiration to, not only me, but also the more than 3 million viewers who are subscribed to her channel.

Even though, I'm not gay, it doesn't mean I can't relate to some of the struggles that Ingrid faced when trying to mask this part of her. She talks about how society put a stamp of disapproval on being gay, thus building the foundation for a metaphorical prison for her. She then continued to build the prison herself while suppressing her true feelings and her true self.

I think a lot of people can relate to trying to hide the parts of themselves that they don't want other people to see. It's like everyone has their own idea of what perfection looks like, and there's always someone who is going to complain. As the saying goes, "You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, but there will always be someone who doesn't like peaches."

It's so incredibly brave and moving that Ingrid wanted to share this part of herself with all of the people who essentially allow her to do what she loves for a living. I appreciated the fact that she spoke to her viewers as if they were in the room with her. She shed light on something that needs to be talked about, especially with the current Supreme Court deliberations on same-sex marriage. The amount of love and respect I have for Ingrid has grown tenfold, and I really hope that a lot of good comes out of her being willing to share her story.

If you haven't watched the video yet, grab a box of tissues and hit play.

What are your thoughts on Ingrid's coming out video?

  1. She's definitely so brave for doing this! I feel like since she's a beauty guru people didn't expect this. Glad she can use her influence for something positive!

  3. I was super shocked when I saw this video too. At first I thought it might've been click bait. I have watched her for many years and always thought her behavior with men was a little off because she seemed to completely morph herself into each different guy's personality but I definitely did not see this coming..It definitely makes sense though now. She's seemed lost for the past year or so and it's shown in her YouTube videos. I'm glad she could finally come clean and get it off her chest.
I'm glad you posted about this.

  4. I was shocked! I had no idea, but after hearing her story and watching her through the years, hearing these rumors from people who supposedly "knew her" before her fame and watching her relationship with Luke unfold, it totally makes sense in hindsight. At first it was hard to believe but regardless she's still amazing and I'm happy that she's allowing herself to find complete happiness! I've been watching her for forever now, but I never comment on any of her videos for some reason. This video was actually the first that I commented on of hers, I was moved that much!

  10. I loved loved loved this video and I too was in complete shock! It's insane to realize our "perfect" online lives, do not in fact reflect the whole truth. We often forget that everyone struggles, everyone has flaws and fears.

  24. I can't either! To think that she's spent her whole life putting up layers and suppressing feelings just to be accepted. I hope she's greeted with love and understanding after releasing this burden.

  27. I was too, Ashley! I was so moved by her honesty, and it really made me think about my life and if I'm just suppressing things for acceptance or comfort. I'm so excited to see what great things this will bring for her.

  30. I completely agree, Jordyn! I applaud her bravery and strength to be able to share this information with the world in such a scary and public way. I hope so many good things come out of this for her.

  31. It was a huge surprise to me too, but I'm so happy for and proud of her for finally releasing this part of her that she's suppressed for her entire life. I'm so excited to see what this does for her in the future. I feel like she can finally be herself and just be happy!

  32. Ingrid was such an inspiration to me even before I watched this video. If you have time, you should definitely check out her channel. She's such an incredible person!

  33. I was really shocked by it too! I'm so glad she was finally able to share it though. So proud of her even though she has no idea who I am haha. That peaches quote is my fave!

  34. I'm so happy for her too, Ashley! I think everyone should get the chance to live life fully and truly be themselves.

  35. I was definitely blind-sided by the whole thing too. I'm glad she finally felt like she was ready to tell the world about this side of her. I think it really shows how you really can't know someone fully no matter how much of their lives they share on the internet. And I really think she did this right, because she posted the video and then went on vacation with her best friends (currently watching all of the snaps for her "baecation" as she calls it). I never thought I'd be so happy for a stranger! Haha.

  36. I thought the same thing, Jenny, but then I was like 'woah' when I finally hit play. It was just so surprising, and it really shows that you can think you know everything about a person, especially bloggers and YouTubers who make their lives public, but you really don't know much about them at all. I'm really happy that she finally released this burden, and I'm looking forward to all of the positivity that's to come from sharing her story.

  37. I agree, Louida! It's so brave of her to be willing to share this part of herself with the world.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree! I think that's why it's such a big deal, because she's not the "typical" person that people think should be gay. I really hope a lot of good comes out of this and other people feel inclined to be honest and just be 100% themselves.

  39. Thanks for sharing this video! I think it was so inspiring for her to make this video and be the voice of so many people who are afraid to use their own voices.

  41. I haven't watched it yet but I fully intend to. There's something about being so public which just makes things like this so much scarier. Sharing your life when you already have shared so much with the world can be daunting. Way to go Ingrid!
