Supernatural #HousCon: Day 1

supernatural con in houston, texas

I think the great thing about Supernatural Con is that it kind of bridges the gap between the celebrities and the fans. There were so many chances to interact with the stars of the show, whether you were asking questions at the Q&A panels, meeting them during autograph sessions or photo ops, dancing on stage at karaoke or even just bumping into them accidentally on the elevator, it was like the stars were your friends. Supernatural fans are a different breed of fans. Yes, there was lots of crying, overwhelming feelings, and squeals, but when people talk about Supernatural, stars included, there's a sense of familiarity, which is why #SPNFamily is a popular hashtag for all Supernatural lovers to use.

All of that said, my first Supernatural Con was crazy awesome! I say "first" because I would love to go back and experience the whole thing all over again. It was incredible, and I was sad to see it come to an end.

Jon and I drove about four hours from Shreveport to Houston to go to the event, and we went to pre-register as soon as we got there. We browsed the booths and bought a few things. I really wanted to get the Supernatural Clue game, but I couldn't afford to dish out $45 for it. Sad day.

With the infamous Impala.

We had to take pics, of course.

When we checked in to our hotel, we were starved, and the front desk agent told me about a Chinese place that delivered till 1 am! We took advantage and ate some sesame chicken before we crawled into bed.

I felt so many amazing emotions the first day. I fell in love with the hilarious Richard Speight Jr. (called Dick from here on out) and the adorable Rob Benedict. They vibed off of each other onstage, and there was so much ad lib and improv. The band that Rob heads up is called Louden Swain, and they were awesome! They even cracked a few jokes themselves.

The first Q&A panel was with Gil McKinney. He played Dean and Sam's grandfather, Henry Winchester, in the show. He is freaking adorable, and he was humbled to be loved by so many Supernatural fans even though he was only in two episodes. There was a girl who came up to ask him a question, and he recognized her by name from another convention. I thought that was so awesome, because it really showed how much he loves his fans!

The next Q&A panel was with Rob, who play Chuck and Carver in the series. I also knew him from the horribly amazing movie, Waiting.  Rob was adorably hilarious. I just wanted to run onstage and hug him, which I did (kinda) later on, but more on that later.

The last Friday Q&A panel was with Kim Rhodes. who plays Sheriff Jody Mills. I also know her from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. I had no idea how awesome she was. After her panel, I became obsessed. I love her so much. There are no words for how much. She's just so honest, and she puts all of her cards out on the table for you. There's no second-guessing. During her panel, she talked about funny things like being a dog trainer, random things like wanting to be a writer, and deeper things like being sober for six years and having a daughter with autism. She was such an inspiration and a joy to watch. When I go to another convention, I would love to have a meet and greet with her and just laugh with her (maybe with some wine).

After Kim's panel, Jon and I went back to the hotel to charge our phones (and my camera) before we went out to eat. Being near the International Bush Airport, I thought there would be plenty of places to choose from, but that would be a negative ghost rider. There was nothing. We ended up finding a place right down the road called Gumbo Jeaux's. Jon and I each had different kinds of burgers (mine was actually a creole chicken burger), and we chowed down on our food.

The last event of the night was the karaoke party. In order to sing, you had to sign up between 5:30 and 6:30 pm in the vendors area, and then they went through them and picked random ones. Some of the cast sang songs by themselves, like Gil McKinney who is super talented, Rob and the rest of Louden Swain sang a song, Sebastian Roche jumped onstage and sang a solo, and Gil and Rob also did a duet of "Faithfully" that was so good!

I had a drink from the bar that cost $10 and tasted disgusting. I don't know how you can mess up a vodka, sprite, and cranberry, but they somehow managed to. I ended up getting picked to go onstage to sing "Baby Got Back" with two other girls. We all jammed out to it along with Rob, Gil, Kim, Sebastian, Dick, and Matt Cohen. When the song ended, Dick complimented me on my dancing, saying something along the lines of my dancing alone was reason enough for him to come out and do karaoke then he gave me a hug. Sebastian addressed me several times by name onstage both before and after the song, and he gave me a hug before I left the stage. Rob was standing by the stairs as I was leaving the stage, and he said I did awesome before giving me a hug. It all happened so fast! It was crazy awesome, and I still smile just thinking about it.

Friday was by far my favorite day of the entire weekend, which says a lot because my favorite character, Castiel, didn't come until Saturday, and the stars of the show, Jensen and Jared, didn't come until Sunday, but even so, Friday was the best day!

Stay tuned for posts about the rest of my Supernatural-filled weekend! You can also check out my Supernatural Con Day 1 highlight video on YouTube!

Have you ever been to a Con?

  1. OMG. The jealousy I have right now is unreal. I'm 9 hours from Houston, but that's still driveable. I might have to see if I can go to this one of these years.
And, I have no idea how I never realized that Rob was in Waiting. I always knew he seemed familiar, but I might have forgotten I had ever seen Waiting.

  4. I love all of the fun cons you go to! It makes me want to do more. You should publish a quarterly "where I will be" list, so we can come meet you there. :-)

  5. I'm officially obsessed with cons! I want to go to all of them, and go to this one again because it was amazing. Ahhh! Yes! That would be so awesome to meet up at all of these random events!

  6. They still have a lot of places to hit on their tour this year. Maybe there will be one closer to you than Houston! I know they'll be returning to Houston during Valentine's Day weekend next year though, so you could plan for that! It was so great, and I think all Supernatural fans should experience it at least once. I forgot Rob was in Waiting until it was mentioned in his panel, then it all clicked! That movie is hilariously inappropriate, and I love it!

  7. I'm in Kansas, so I'm pretty sure Houston would be closest. ONE OF THESE DAYS.

  8. I need to go to one of these. ;_; It looks like so much fun, and for once, I'd actually take pictures of things/people instead of food/cats! :O!!

(P.S. Waiting was indeed horribly amazing, hahaha. That's the perfect phrase to describe it.)

  9. I had a blast (as you can probably tell)! I hope you can make it to one one day. I want to do it all over again!

  10. YES! Do it! It's totally worth it. And if you go, you have to do the whole weekend! Some people just came for one or two days, but the first day was my favorite day!

  11. I can only imagine how fun this was! While I'm not a Supernatural fan (it's on my list to watch just haven't gotten around to it) I've been to similar fan conferences and have had plenty of interaction with the fandom on Tumblr. I hope you get to experience another one!

  12. OMG that sandwich!
I haven't watched Supernatural in a while. I forget it is on. I may have to set it to record on my DVR so I can catch up! What a blast!

  13. YES! Best sandwich ever. If I ever go again, I would love to have a Jared and Jensen sandwich. Ooh la la. You definitely need to catch up! It was so much fun!

  14. It was so much fun! I wish I could go back and relive the whole weekend! You should definitely watch Supernatural. It's amazing! And they just renewed for an 11th season, so you have some binge watching to do! Haha. What kind of fan conferences have been to? This was only my second con. My first was Dallas Comic Con, which was also a blast.

  15. OH MY GOSH! That is so cool! I never watched Supernatural, but the fact that the actors were SO awesome with their fans makes me want to!

  17. I went to the Minneapolis Comic Con! Which was fun. I'd love to go to the big San Diego Comic Con and a Harry Potter con.

  18. Right?! Who needs that much hot sauce??

    ReplyDelete
  19. That sounds so fun! I would love to go to the San Diego one too. There are so many awesome stars to see there. The Dallas Comic Con was pretty small, but I got to meet the Weasley twins, which is the only reason I wanted to go. It was still so much fun! I have some friends trying to go to the San Diego Comic Con, but they're nervous it's going to sell out fast. I'm sure it does!

  20. It was so awesome, Raewyn! If you ever get around to watching the show, you should definitely go to one. I'm sure you'll get addicted. It's hard not to. It's so intriguing! I loved how humble all of the actors were, and they were really just having a blast interacting with their fans. I even had a conversation with Jared Padalecki, which still makes me cheesy grin every time I think about it.

  21. What a fun show! I love going to industry shows like, to be around others who love what you love, get access to the stars and see all the previews!

  22. Oh my gosh this was SO FUN!!! This has to be a new favorite post of yours, Tiffany! Getting up on stage and everything! I'm so looking forward to the next one. And Sir Mix-Alot? PRICELESS. Favorite song as a kid--only took me years later, hearing it again, to realize what the rest of the lyrics were about. Haha!!

    Awesome post!!

  23. Looks like a blast! I'd love to be able go to one someday! Hopefully they don't stop doing them for a while! I love how the actors that weren't in very many episodes are such a big part of it! So awesome that you got to sing with all of them!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yayyyy! That made me so happy to read, Elora! It was such an amazing day, and this day was my favorite of the entire weekend. It was a thrill to sing "Baby Got Back" with them. I still can't believe it happened! Ah! It was such a blast, and I would love to go back and relive the whole weekend all over again.

  25. I know they already have some planned for 2016, so I think as long as they're making the show, they'll do the conventions. I hope you get to make it to one someday. I would love to go again! I'm so glad that actors that weren't in it much were there too! I mean, Gil McKinney was only in 2 episodes, but he did two panels and went onstage several times Friday and Saturday to sing. He has such an amazing singing voice. Gah!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes! It was so amazing. I wish all of my shows did conventions like this. I would be so broke though!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I bet! I would too--I'd be hoping that I'd be reliving it in my dream once I go to sleep! What fun.

  28. I remember I had a poster of him on my wall in middle school and my brother loves the show! I just didn't really watch tv until Iman came around and now I have so much to catch up on!! Late night babyfeeding tv for the summer?

  29. That's so awesome, they all seemed super talented!

    ReplyDelete
  30. They are! It's pretty unfair actually. They're blessed with good looks, good acting skills, AND the ability to sing? Not fair at all.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Fun fun fun :) Oh man giving me all these awesome memories from DallasCon

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes! Do it! It's amazing. You'll get addicted.

  33. I had so much fun at my first Supernatural Con, and I almost want to go again when the go to Dallas later this year! They also already have a Houston date set for Valentine's Day next year too, so who knows? I want to go again!

  34. It was so good, Sierra! The chicken burger was double the size of the bun it was on. Incredible!

  35. It was a blast! I love her shirt too, and it definitely described her to a tee. You should definitely watch the show. It just got renewed for an 11th season, so you have a bit to catch up on haha.
