Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) {book review}

After I finished reading Cinder, I was so stressed that I needed to figure out what was going to happen next. Little did I know that Scarlet would end up being more stressful because, not only does it add to the storyline of Cinder, it also adds another one, leaving me with two storylines to stress about before the third book in the Lunar Chronicles.

Scarlet is a futuristic telling of Little Red Riding Hood. It follows a girl named Scarlet whose grandmother has gone missing. She goes on an unpredictable journey with a man named Wolf, a street who has information about her grandmother. Scarlet soon learns that there are several things about her grandmother that she doesn't know about. Scarlet and Wolf are met with several unexpected encounters and difficulties on their mission to save Scarlet's grandmother.
Meanwhile, Cinder is set on escaping from the tower that Prince Kai (now Emperor Kai) has locked her in. When she and fellow fugitive, Thorne, are finally able to escape, they have a few misadventures of their own. When these two stories finally come together, minds are blown (at least mine was).
Marissa Meyer is a bit of a genius. I thought it couldn't get much better than Cinder, but I think I actually enjoyed Scarlet more. I was stressed a lot because the stories would keep flip-flopping. At the end, I don't want to say it's a cliff-hanger, but it leaves you in a good position for the start of the third book, Cress. 
The Lunar Chronicles is easily one of my favorite series (even though I've only read half of it), simply because of the connection that I (and I'm sure other readers as well) have made with the two main characters, Cinder and Scarlet. Anyone who loved these childhood fairy tales will love this futuristic telling of them. I think young girls could definitely look at both of them as heroes in a way. They're young, and they're doing what they need to do to save themselves and their loved ones.

This book deserves a 5/5. It was a fast-paced read that left me yearning for the third book. (Then I get a little sad because there's also a fourth book, meaning I'll have to wait even longer to figure out everything that happens).
