Inappropriate Songs I Listened to as a Child.

Music is relevant for all occasions, whether you're elated, in a horrible mood, at weddings, in times of loss, during break-ups, while driving, when you're excited or just want to cry or punch a wall. There's a song for it.

Even as a child, I loved listening to music. My favorite song was "Ice Ice Baby," and I would consider moving around in circles and while simultaneously waving my arms awkwardly proper dancing. Granted, I was two. Of course, I never knew what the lyrics behind the catchy beat were saying (I still don't really), and even as more songs added themselves to my music repertoire, I still didn't pay attention to the words. I often belted the lyrics out to songs I enjoyed, which eventually led to me listening to some dirty songs that I didn't even know I was dirty until years later when things like iPods and YouTube came into existence.

IT WASN'T ME by SHAGGY
Okay, you probably think I'm extra non-observant for this one since I was a little older, but in my defense, I barely understood a word that Shaggy was saying. All I really understood the first million times I listened to it was "It wasn't me," so how was I supposed to know that he was cheating on his girl on several different surfaces in his own home while his girl caught it on camera? (Because people just carried around video cameras back in the day...)

BABY GOT BACK by SIR MIX-A-LOT
An obvious one. Even though I watched the music video with butts everywhere, including on the record the DJ was spinning, it still didn't click that this song was inappropriate. I just thought it was a catchy song about butts. I ignored the "I wanna get ya home and uh, double up, uh uh!" and "Cause I'm long, and I'm strong, and I'm down to get the friction on," and simply just memorized all the lyrics and shook my "healthy butt."

DIGITAL GETDOWN by *NSYNC
I literally loved every single thing ever sung by NSYNC. They're musical geniuses, and yes, I did squeal when they came out on stage for a 30-second performance during the 2013 VMA's, and yes, I still do listen to them on the reg. "No Strings Attached" is by far my favorite CD by them, and I adored "Digital Get Down." I mean, this was the time of new technology, people. I didn't know webcams were a thing. For all I knew, getting down meant getting down and jammin' to the music. Even though he clearly says "We're gettin' freaky deaky." I was in elementary school. I didn't know what the meant. So naive.

SLAM DUNK (DA FUNK) by 5IVE
Like most people, I fell in love with this song on Disney Channel when it was on Smart House. Who doesn't want to dance to ginormous music videos on their wall just by shouting commands to the air? But I digress. This song really spells out all the inappropriateness with lyrics like "Push it in, pull it out, to the beat." I mean, most of the lyrics sound like it's talking about basketball, but I think we can all read through the lines.

I'LL MAKE LOVE TO YOU by BOYZ II MEN
In my defense, I was listening to Boyz II Men since I came out of the womb, and even though most of their songs are super inappropriate, it wasn't until years later that I realized what this song was about. You would think that the song name pretty much spells it out, but I guess I was just a little dim. I belted out "Throw your clothes on the floor. I'm gonna take my clothes off too" with no shame.

NICE & SLOW by USHER
This honestly used to be one of my favorite songs. It's still so catchy. Anytime I see the clock strike 7, I think of this song. Even with lyrics like "I got plans to put my hands in places I've never seen" and "Makin' love until the sun comes up," I thought this song was totally innocent.

Did you listen to songs you didn't know were inappropriate when you were younger?

  1. Bahahahaha. Ice Ice Baby was also my jam! My parents tried to save my innocent ears, though. And in my naivete, I learned all the words to My Humps while on a youth choir trip because I knew mom wouldn't let me listen to it when I got home. I learned the words so I could sing the song in my head, of course. It wasn't until years later when I realized "Mix your milk wit my coco puffs" meant. And then I promptly vomited everywhere.

  4. Britney Spears was my main source of "inappropriate" songs. Her songs including Criminal was my mega-favorite track until I got to know what was that about, haha!

  9. I'm showing my age because I was already full grown when these songs came out!
But now, I limit the pop songs our son listens to on the radio - especially if it has words about sex and booty!

  11. Omg, when R. Kelly's "Doin' It" was really popular, my dad and I were sitting in traffic while this song played on the radio. I had no idea what doing it was...and she totally orgasms in the song(I thought she was just enjoying herself or something! I guess she was though! lol) My dad turned and was like, "What are we listening to?!" Looking back,I'm pretty sure it was awkward!!

  12. My classmates were all into 50 Cent and as embarrassing as it is to admit it, we listen to his songs (especially In Da Club and Candy Shop) repeatedly.
