7 Life Lessons from Veronica Mars.

Calling all fellow Marshmallows!

I've loved Veronica Mars for about a year now. I know I came to the party way late, but that doesn't mean my love and passion for the show is any less than those who watched it when it was actually on TV. I spent weeks watching VM episodes back-to-back becoming obsessed with Veronica and wishing that I went to Neptune High so that we could be BFFs and solve crimes together. In spite of her lack of popularity, I pretty much wanted her life. Flaws and all.

After I finished watching the show, I was devastated at the open ending, so much that I blogged about it back in June. It's funny to look back at that now since I've seen the movie (which had no mention of Duncan in it by the way. I mean...why didn't they bring him back for the reunion. It's been 10 years. People forget things. Okay. Maybe not in his case, but still).

My love affair with Veronica Mars has taught me so much. I'm still working on becoming a P.I./future lawyer, but for some reason I don't think that's going to pan out for me.

TRUE LOVE CONQUERS ALL.
I mean, really. All of the crap that Logan and Veronica went through, and hallelujah (spoiler alert) they end up together! Thank the lawwwd! Logan was a bit of a jerk in the beginning of the series (flashback to him breaking Veronica's headlights), but he redeemed himself a billion times during the show and then one last time in the movie.

Hellooooo Logan Echolls!

MAKE FRIENDS THAT WILL HAVE YOUR BACK.
As I mentioned, Veronica wasn't the most popular kid in the sandbox. In fact, after an incident way back when at the beginning of her high school career, she was pretty much isolated from the popular crowd, aka the 09ers," and was happily besties with her dad. The few friends that Veronica did make while she was in high school ended up being the friends that she would have for life. Not only were her friends awesome, they were also resourceful. Mac was a computer genius (read: computer hacker), and Wallace worked in the counselor's office (aka he had access to everyone's files). She was even friends with Weevil, the head of a motorcycle gang. Not to mention her ex boyfriend, Leo, who worked in the sheriff's department. Moral of the story is -- make friends who are willing to do almost anything for you (and have some pretty resourceful skills and connections).

RESPECT YOURSELF.
Veronica could have weaseled her way back into the 09ers good graces if she really wanted to, but she had way too much respect for herself, and she was willing to put her morals and beliefs before popularity. Not only did she have respect for herself, she believed that other people should have respect for themselves too. One of my favorite lines from the series:

ALWAYS BRING BACKUP.
While Veronica had an actual dog that she named Backup that helped on her crime solving escapades, the moral of the story is to always bring backup, not necessarily in the form of a dog. You can always travel in packs of at least two or always have a pocket knife on you. You could also, in true Veronica fashion, invest in a taser.

HAVE FAITH IN PEOPLE.
There are lots of people who look at their lives and think that they've been through a lot, but in some ways, Veronica takes the cake. Her best friend was murdered. She was raped at a party. Her mom abandoned her. That was all just in the first episode. Even though Veronica's life was a constant pile of rotating crap, she still had faith in the people she loved, namely her dad and her best friends and eventually Logan.

ALL SITUATIONS CALL FOR WIT.
Veronica was is one of the most witty characters I've ever watched. It didn't matter what kind of situation she was in, there was always some one-liner or witty comment to be made. Some of my faves:

"So, my grandma Reynolds was always saying 'when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.' I wish she was still alive, because I'd really like to ask her what she suggests for when life gives you chlamydia."

"Guess you never know when true love's gonna find you."

"If it comes looking for me, I'll be over by the espresso machine."

"Well, actually, despite popular opinion, you really can't beat the truth out of someone."

(After pulling a frozen rat out of the freezer): "Are you keeping a dead rat in our freezer or do we have a slam dunk lawsuit against the processed food industry?"

"It's like you're this giant jackass pinata begging for someone to beat the candy out of you."

There are so many life lessons to be learned from Veronica Mars, and writing this just made me want to watch the whole series and the movie all over again. Have you ever watched Veronica Mars? What are your favorite things about the series?

  1. I watched it when it first came out, but I'm rewatching it all before I see the movie. I'm finally on season two. It's difficult to get through it all quickly when my daughter cuts her naps short, haha! I haven't been too careful about avoiding spoilers because I really wanted to know if Logan and Veronica wind up together and I'm SO HAPPY.

  12. That's so cool that you got second place in that contest! I would have died of happiness if I would have been able to win a walk on role. Did you contribute to the Kickstarter project? By the time I became obsessed, it was already over!

  13. It's definitely an awesome watch. It has a lot of quotable lines in it, both witty ones and inspiring ones.

  14. No I didn't but we followed the whole kickstarter project online. We just didn't have the means to at the time. We wished we could have though!

  15. I'm also glad Logan and her ended up together! I did feel bad for Piz though, I'd happily take him! ;) I love anything that Kristen Bell is in.

  16. Personally, I don't think I could have handled all the Logan drama, but I think Veronica was the perfect person for the job, and I'm so so SOOOO happy they ended up together! I would have definitely taken Piz in a heartbeat. He's so adorable! I love everything Kristen Bell is in too! She's amazing!

  17. I wish I could have too! I was so jealous of all of the people who paid enough to get a walk-on role in the movie!

  18. I know, I kinda felt like they were hinting at Wallace and Mac were together. Or at least they were almost always in a scene together.

  19. I feel like Wallace and Mac should have found love! I didn't like any of Wallace's ladies, but I think the two of them would have been so funny and punny together.

  20. I'm obsessed with V. Mars she's amazing and Kristen Bell was perfect for her. I watched the whole series while it was on and {fun fact} during the third season when they had the American Eagle/Veronica Mars contest I got 2nd place, to win a walk on spot on the show, so I got the second season on DVD and season 6 of Gilmore Girls on DVD for my "winnings" it's was pretty cool. I thought the ending to the movie was perfect and I was always 100% Team Logan!
