Worst. Date. Ever.

worst date ever + dating disasters
When I was a college freshman, I went on a dating frenzy. I had just gotten out of one of my most serious relationships at the time, and I was ready to embrace the college lifestyle. Everyone said that college was the perfect time for you to figure out your life, relationships included, and I took almost every opportunity I could to do so.

One of the most notable dates I went on (that didn't end in a follow-up date) went a little something like this...

First off, I wish I could tell you how I met this guy (we'll call him Jeff). I really don't know. Maybe we had a mutual friend? I honestly have no idea, so I can't share that bit with y'all. What I can tell you is that he was a bit older than me and was actually out of college already. He lived in Shreveport, but I was going to school in Ruston at the time, so we decided to meet up when I was in town visiting my family one weekend.

So Jeff picked me up, and we went straight to the movie theater. I was never a fan of the typical dinner and a movie date (I mean, you don't even get to talk to the person...), particularly for a first date, so that should have been a sign right there, but I ignored it. He picked the movie, but I was okay with his choice, which was Eagle Eye. I'm a big fan of Shia (minus the whole going crazy and being a generally not good person thing, but on screen and also back in the Even Stevens/Holes days, Shia was my man), so I didn't complain.

During the movie, he put his arm around me, which would have been sweet, except his arm was draped a little lower than my neck, which meant that I was awkwardly laying on his arm, uncomfortably away my seat. Then he tried to put his hand on my knee, and I wasn't having it (#prude). Eventually, he got smart and held my hand instead. I was 18 at the time, so butterflies flew in spite of the date plans.

That was pretty much the only good thing that happened during the date though. Afterward, he said he was going to take me to dinner, and I could pick the place. Indecisive me didn't know what to pick because 1) I'm indecisive, as mentioned and 2) I wasn't really that familiar with Shreveport (since I had actually lived outside of Shreveport in Bossier), so I didn't know any good restaurants around. I kid you not, he pulled into Sonic. Ummm...I liked Sonic as an after school hang out spot, but on a first date? No, sir.

Irrelevant side note --
When we were driving back to his place, "Mrs. Officer" by Lil Wayne came on. This was the first time I ever heard the song, and I was so confused by it, but later, I started to love it. I jam hard to it when it comes up on my old iPod.

Okay, so we're driving back to his place to eat our to-go Sonic, and Jeff doesn't turn any lights on when we get there. Should I have been creeped out? Not sure. He turns on the TV and settles on I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Out of everything on TV, that's what he picks. Did I have a say? Of course not. This guy was pretty serious about his entertainment, and my opinion clearly didn't matter.

After finishing our Sonic and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer in silence, I get him to drive me home, hoping this will be the end of it, but no. He texts me several times during the following months, asking for another date. Some I ignored; others I answered. What made me mad about this was he never texted anything of relevance as the first text. His first text, always (I mean every single time), was "Hi." Ugh! It drove me nuts. Then when I denied him a second date, he started saying all of these bad things about me, including something along the lines of "I have sex with girls who are prettier than you every week." Was that supposed to make me jealous? I'm not sure, but I told him to go have sex with one of them and stop bothering me.

Relevant side note --
I did not sleep with this guy. Also, years after our first date, he followed me on Instagram. Kbye.

The Best and Worst Date Stories

  1. Yikes. I like Sonic too but definitely NOT on a first date. It would have driven me NUTS if he never asked my opinion on the TV show or movie. I may not have known what to watch but the question itself is important.

  2. Wow. First of all: Movie + Dinner for a first date? Ew. How aca-awkward. Secondly: Sonic? Hellur I love my 50 cent corndog and slushie like the next girl, but that's when it's 50 cent corn dog day and I'm taking my little brothers to Sonic on an after school outing. Thirdly: Why do exes think they can follow us on Instagram? It's like OK have fun but let me warn you, I'm gorgeous and have a great life despite our terrible terrible date. Poopface. And finally: I had a huge stinkin crush on dorky Shia as Lewis in Even Stevens. That is all.

  4. What a lame-0. I'ts like "hey I scraped out the change in my car to buy you a hot dog that I'm hoping you will eat seductively."

  5. Creepo! I have lucked up and had pretty good first dates--even the one where my date leaned in and kissed me on the teeth because I was mid-sentence wasn't that bad. (He was a super nice guy, and I was running my mouth instead of figuring out the whole kissing thing!)

  6. I'm sure if I looked back on it, I probably had some bad first dates, actually, my first date with my now boyfriend went rather awkwardly and strange, as dating goes! Which, is kind of funny!

  7. Ha!! I love first date stories. That guy sounds like such a loser. I don't really have any bad experiences. I've only been on maybe like 4 or 5 first dates? And all but one ended up in a relationship. I only accept if I really like the guy already, or in one case just wanted him to stop bothering me (that's the one that went no where). I'm pretty picky and don't really like to go one on one with someone unless there's some major potential...plus I never really got asked out on dates much. Glad you found the right guy after that experience! :)

  8. I have to admit, I don't miss dating. It's so awkward haha.

  9. I wish I would have gotten to know this guy a little better before I agreed to a date. It was pretty awful (clearly). Most of the "dating" I did in college was just hanging out on campus or going to campus events together. I don't know what I'd do if I was in the dating game now! I'm definitely grateful that I found Jon in college.

  10. That's great that y'all are still together after an awkward first date! I was always awkward on first dates. Really, I'm just awkward in general.

  11. That's so cute! That sounds like one of those things that happen in movies, and then it ends up being a funny story to tell later.

  12. Exactly! It was pretty horrible, and I'm definitely glad that's in the past, and I never have to see him again.

  13. That's good that you can't recall a bad date! All of my first dates in the past have just been awkward. This is the only one that was just awful.

  14. Yeaaa! I love Sonic, but not for a first date. It was pretty horrible. I mean, it was delicious, but horrible for what it was. And I assure you, he did not receive a follow back. And dorky Shia was the best Shia. I wish he could revert.

  15. Exactly! If he would've asked, and I said "You can pick," then I wouldn't have a right to complain, but no option was given, so I'm going to complain (and blog about it haha)!

  16. OMG THIS SOUNDS TERRIBLE!!! But hey, it makes for a great story later haha. I also despise when guys say "hi" as a method of instigating conversation. SoOooOOOoOOo creative woohoo. Can I link up with a post I wrote a while ago about my worst date?

  17. I'm so glad you're with me on the "hi" texting thing. It's so annoying. You can totally link up an old post! I'd love to read it!

  18. I must have low standards cause Sonic on a first date sounds good to me! Everyone is already on their best behavior when you first meet them, a casual setting is much more likely to bring out the real you.

  19. ohmygosh. I have this friend who will message me on facebook constantly "hi." or "hey, what's up?" and sometimes I'll answer but then he won't...like dude. What's the point. and he's just a friend! I don't even get it.

  20. Ugh! I would get so annoyed! That's so dumb, especially since you can see whether people have read your Facebook messages or not. That's so strange! People are weird.

  21. If I'd ever actually been on a date I'd definitely linkup with you! Hahaha.
